Notes

1. NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949 as a counterweight to the Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies. It is a military alliance based in Brussels, Belgium, that serves as an integrated defense structure for its member states. It aims to safeguard their security by political and military means. The organization is composed of the United States, Canada, and twenty-six European countries. The member states regard an attack on one of them as an attack on all. NATO has been working in Afghanistan and Pakistan alongside the United States to stabilize the region following the September 11 attacks.

2. U.S. Strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Pakistan has been a safe haven for the Taliban from the time that NATO, led by the United States, undertook actions to overthrow the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The Taliban has supported Al-Qaeda leaders moving to the bordering region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The United States assists Pakistan in its struggle to restrain the increasing flow of radical Islamic militants into the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The goals of U.S. policy in the region are to defeat both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, stabilize the two countries’ governments, and promote democracy.
