TB Awareness Day A: Good health makes a sound body. Welcome to everyone listening to this program. March 24 is the day set aside each year to raise global awareness about the scourge of tuberculosis or TB, which kills nearly two million people every year. This is what we’ll be looking at today. If we have time, Dr. Mohammed Ladan will come on to answer some of the questions that we have received from you. It is estimated that one-third (1/3) of the people, of the people are infected with the organism that causes tuberculosis or TB. Usually, the organism that causes TB takes refuge in the intestines, and the human body’s immune system is able to protect people from contracting full-blown TB. However, the organism can continue to live in a person’s body if the body’s immune system is damaged or its strength declines, and at this point the organism will begin to spread and take over. The organism that causes TB (referred to as “bacterial” in English) is spread through the air when someone who is stricken with the disease breathes, or sneezes, or coughs, or even speaks. Now, there is also a type of tuberculosis that is resistant to medication. You’ll hear from our correspondent about the preparations that are being made for TB Day to raise global awareness about this problem of tuberculosis. |
