The Forum on Security Issues in the Northern Regions of Niger and Mali Has Started

On the twenty-fifth of this month, a discussion forum was convened in Niamey, the capital city of Niger, in order to find ways to establish peace and security in the northern territories of the Republics of Niger and Mali. During the three-day forum, delegations from the Republics of Niger and Mali were scheduled to discuss how to restore peace in their northern regions. The discussion forum took place in the context of the dire circumstances affecting the northern areas of both countries, where certain rebel groups are creating unrest.

Former Minister of Domestic Affairs for the Republic of Niger Albedi Abouba led the opening festivities of the discussion forum. Abouba e.0.xplained that in order to promote unity between the two countries and their peoples, the governments of Mali and the Republic of Niger would take immediate steps to restore peace as quickly as possible to the regions that are suffering from unrest with the assistance of other friendly countries.

Notes

1. Rebels in Northern Mali and Niger

Niger and Mali are landlocked West African nations whose northern regions reach into the Sahara Desert. The northern regions of both countries are populated by Tuareg tribes, who move freely between the two countries. The Tuaregs feel that they have been marginalized by both countries; this has led to rebel groups emerging from the tribes. These rebels groups have carried out attacks on the governments of both nations.
