Mr. Umaru Yar’Adua has established a firm foundation during his first year at the helm of affairs in Nigeria May 29 marks the one-year anniversary of Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration. To celebrate this day, President Umaru Yar’Adua declared May 29 a national holiday. Nigerian analysts believe that during the first year of his administration, Umaru Yar’Adua has respected the rule of law, and has therefore established a firm foundation for correcting the problems facing Nigeria. When Umaru Yar’Adua took the oath of office as the president of Nigeria, he explained that he would devote himself to building infrastructure, improving the democratic legal system, strengthening the environment of peace, and stepping up the fight against corruption and bribery. Mr. Bola Akinterinwa, a professor from the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, believes that Umaru Yar’Adua has recorded certain successes during the past year. During the past year in his term of office, he has laid a foundation for a new Nigeria, and this foundation is running the affairs of the government according to the rule of law. Several governors have been removed from office due to their corrupt activities. In March of last year, the ministers of health and national security were removed from office for mismanagement of government funds. These examples indicate that Umaru Yar’Adua has run the government’s affairs according to the rule of law. Some politicians have expressed reservations about Umaru Yar’Adua's experience in administering the country's affairs and believe that Umaru Yar’Adua lacks the ability to make informed decisions as the president of Nigeria. A coalition of Nigerian opposition parties asked Umaru Yar’Adua to resign from his position after spending one year at the helm of the government. Nigerian Institute of International Affairs scholar Bola Akinterinwa explained that gaining the understanding and support of the Nigerian people is the primary challenge that Umaru Yar’Adua will face over the next three years of his government. Bola Akinterinwa believes that this challenge will come from the Nigerian people. They need to understand the future toward which the president is leading them, and then they can decide whether to support him or not. If there are no roadblocks between the government and the public in their interactions with each other, then the country will be able to make progress. |

Notes
NOTES The Nigerian President's First Year in Office
1. The present Nigerian President was sworn in office in May of 2007, and since then, most citizens, especially members of the opposition party, believe there has been little or no change in Nigeria.
Nigeria is known for its past corrupt governance and the public is hardly satisfied with the past elected presidents. Many Nigerians believe the current president only won the election because he was chosen by the previous president rather than through a fair election.
Some of the existing problems in Nigeria include the economic reform coming to a stop, the gradually collapsing power grid and the continuous attack on the pipelines and regions where the country's oil is produced.
Yar Adua is described by some people as Nigeria's first president to be university-educated. He has set up committees to investigate corruption under Obasanjo's (the previous president) rule but little tangible progress has been made due to lack of infrastructure and power projects.

<category>Background Information</category>
<note>Many Nigerians believe most of their political leaders go into office with moderate standards of living but end up very wealthy after a few years of leadership. Some go into office with good intentions, but end up being overthrown by the greedy and corrupt ones. Most people also believe that only General Murtala Muhammad and Muhammadu Buhari are known to have run a government that aimed at transforming the nation from corruption, and both ended up being overthrown.
Before Murtala was murdered, he seized the properties and illegally acquired the wealth of those who served under General Gowon, but those who succeeded him left office richer in contradiction with his dream of enthroning accountability and good governance, leaving the poor, hungry, and suffering with all kinds of diseases.
Obasanjo and Yar Adu'a have been in Nigerian governments before their recent rules. These two, as well as the highest ranking members of the offshoot of Murtala's administration, became very rich and acquired big investments. Obasanjo currently has farms among various investments, while Yar Adu'a acquired shipping lines. All of the wealth is reported to be traceable to the Nigerian treasury, which was looted with impunity before it was handed over to Shagari in 1979.

However, in Hausa, people could be referred to as experts when they have a western education or some religious (Islamic) education, and have the ability to analyze issues in a society.</note>
