South Africa sees rapid progress in the development of global industries Among the 50 transnational corporations that were mentioned in a report from the UN Conference on Trade and Development as attracting the world’s attention, seven are South African. These corporations have a strong competitive capacity, even among developed countries. Among these corporations, the South Africa-based Anglo American plc and De Beers have already become large mining corporations. South African Breweries has joined the ranks of the biggest brewing companies in the world, and Sappi is listed among the largest paper companies in the world. MTN not only operates throughout Africa, but also controls various European, American and Asian markets, while MDDAS already sells its products in more than 40 national and regional markets around the world. The reason South Africa has succeeded in transnational industrial development is because it has an advanced system in place for managing business, trade and currency exchanges, as well as secure mechanisms for financial matters and for managing currency transactions according to international standards. In order to increase their potential to enter international markets, South African corporations first tend to purchase other domestic companies. Once they have entered the international market, many transnational corporations based in South Africa sell off other less important companies, so that they gradually become corporations that control various specialized markets around the world. In order to rectify various problems they encounter in international markets, these South Africa-based transnational corporations tend to purchase a number of industries from surrounding countries. For example, South African Breweries purchased a brewery owned by the Tanzanian government, while De Beers purchased and reorganized a Namibian diamond company. |
