Economic Challenges in Africa
1. The economies of African countries experienced growth over the past years from internal effort through strategic international trade and investment policies, revenue from natural resources, and the cooperation of international communities and institutions. Nevertheless, other factors that impact the global economy—financial crises, food crises, energy crises, and climate change—pose threats to Africa's economic development. The World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Africa Progress Panel (APP) are active in addressing these issues.
The WEF is an independent international organization founded in 1971 by Klaus M. Schwab, a business professor in Switzerland. It gathers influential groups of business and political leaders, selected intellectuals, and journalists at its annual meeting in Davos, to discuss global issues and approaches to addressing sustainable socio-economic activities that promote the economic development of countries around the world. Regional meetings, like the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town, South Africa, are held around the world in an effort to engage leaders in partnership to address global issues and improve the state of the world.
Established in 2006, the APP evaluates and reports on progress in Africa to ensure the materialization of the international community's promises of reducing poverty throughout the continent. The APP is led by a panel of world figures, including former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who is the chair; Tony Blair, the former prime minister of Great Britain; and Michel Camdessus, the former managing director of the International Monetary Fund.
