VOA's Abuja correspondent quoted the Nigerian press secretary, Frank Nweke, as saying to journalists yesterday, on Monday, that they have confirmed the appearance of bird flu in the states of Katsina and Zamfara, as well as in the national capital Abuja.

In response, Nigeria is preparing to purchase 250,000 doses of the antiviral medicine used for bird flu in an attempt to calm the population's fear that the bird flu could become an epidemic if the virus becomes infectious among human beings.

A senior official in the Nigerian Health Ministry, Dr. Ahemd Nasidi, said that the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo has thus far set a good example in terms of preventing the outbreak of the virus. Dr. Nasidi said, “Considering the effort put forth by this country and the president himself, our partners in this effort have said themselves that Nigeria has taken strong measures in a timely manner. It is frustrating, though, because Africa has never faced this sort of epidemic before. This is the first time, and because of that, we have no preparations like the countries of South Asia that have faced this kind of epidemic in the past and, therefore, know which measures are the most suitable to take.

Concerning the current situation, an expert on infectious diseases with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN explained to the reporters in Kano that Africa will not see the same scale of outbreak as Asia. The reason, he explained, is that in Asia there are an enormous number of chickens being raised or living in close proximity to humans.

Nonetheless, health officials at the UN fear that the disease could end up becoming entrenched in African cities, which are crowded with people and where AIDS and malnutrition have weakened the immune system of many people.
