Obasanjo

A: For the first time since he became entangled in the controversy that he had no interest in sitting on the seat of power, today the president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, appeared in public to inform the world and all those doubting his intentions, that he has no desire to sit a day longer beyond the twenty-ninth of May of next year. President Olusegun Obasanjo, who the whole country, especially the commentators, they spent a long time watching his movements, that he would appear publicly ... and explain his intentions for the campaign that has begun to take root since the year two thousand and five. It has even come to a situation where some are calling for an interim government. He’s been annoyed with those calling for it, saying that everyone who calls for an interim government is trying to prevent the water from flowing, and bring unrest in the country.

Well, on whether one agrees with president Olusegun Obasanjo’s plan or not, two commentators on Nigerian affairs differ, that is Alhaji Bashir Baba and Alhaji Bello Katuni, each of whom has a different opinion.

First of all, here’s the opinion of Bashir Baba that he explains to us:

B: … Before speaking of an interim government, you know there’s the subject of campaigning. Well, every one of the candidates, we’ve said it before a lot, and we’re repeating it more and more. As the Hausa say, “The king is not bad, but his courtiers are.” So, for that candidate, one doesn’t have his bone that he’s seeking to go beyond. He gathered together some adherents, who in the past had supported Abacha in this kind of arrangement. They are the ones who preached to him about the devil. And you know that there’s sweetness in power ... since this talk he didn’t hear it until it began to affect him badly.

These kind of people have again entered the fray now, and they are coming out with talk of an interim government. It’s not for nothing that they keep bringing their shares, that they pay him various visits, until this talk began to get into his head ... Because if they go and confront the public, they won’t vote. We’re doing democracy now, and there’s one path that they’ll follow, maybe ... oh, ah ... perhaps they’ll enter the government, and one says the election was out of control ... and the president will say OK, the time for stepping down will be thus, and they’ll make an interim government; then they’ll be taken and given positions since they are the ones the President always sees around his palace.

Therefore, I’m not the least bit surprised about what happened.

A: In the other corner, Alhaji Bello Katuni, another commentator on matters, he thinks that up to now, there’s been other hornets to hit.

C: See how Bashir says that’s not the way it is; as for me, if I think it’s not that way, I think about it. When one sets no traps, then no help. This topic of what Obasanjo said, well everyone knows the character of politicians in this country: what they say is different from what’s in their heart. It’s true that there’s no proportionality between what people seek to know, and what they say. What’s undoubtedly true is, it’s in their hearts. This talk doesn’t go anywhere, and if it’s not talk, there’s no work. If everything in the country is kept secret, and everyone says keep it secret, well, there’s no politics. And the goat of politics, one can get it to say anything.

So, if it’s this talk that he intends to do it, then the first thing he should do is start certifying the law that will be laid down in the country and look at it, how the political authorities have obtained their property everywhere, and how the election will be administered. But for the other people, start talking about teaching the president to give us a year: if it was done this way back then, in the military period, now we’re in a democracy. Therefore we should reduce the time, or announce shorter times. These people should think about it, or people will get confused by negotiating with the political authorities. Until now there have been some things ... not this time, that this talk doesn’t apply to. It’s only this kind of thing that you make noise about on your drum, to hear the similarity, after saying whatever happened back then doesn’t matter now.

A: That was the opinion of a commentator on current matters, Bello Katuni. He was analyzing the explanation that Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo made.

Umar Faruku Musa, Voice of America, in Abuja, Nigeria.

Nigeria has seen a succession of military regimes for many years. Olusegun Obasanjo was elected president in 1999, and served two terms. When he leaves, he will be succeeded by another democratically elected president, making it a historic change of power for Nigeria. He made fighting corruption one of his priorities in a country considered to be one of the most corrupt in the world. Nigeria has played an important role in the foundation of organizations like the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and NEPAD (New African Partnership for Development) that are active in regional peacekeeping and development. Obasanjo has been the chair of the African Union as well. He managed to pay off some of the national debt, but he has also been criticized regarding the way he handles national matters, like his 2005 attempt to amend the country’s constitution that has been resisted by most Nigerians.

<eng-response>This report relates to comments from two critics, Bashir Baba and Alhaji Bello Katuni, on the Nigerian president's answer to accusations regarding a possible plan to extend his tenure. Obasanjo not only refutes the claim, but he also describes the presumption of an interim government as an impediment to progress, according to the reporter. In two conflicting interpretations, Bashir Baba and Alhaji Bello Katuni speak about the president's declaration. While Katuni denounces the hypocrisy of politicians, the president included because he has not shown proof of his intention to step down, Bashir Baba depicts the president as an instrument used by vicious politicians with an agenda of holding power.</eng-response>

<eng-response>Two critics give their points of view regarding Nigerian President Obasanjo's objection of claims that he aims for another term in office, according to this report. Obasanjo reaffirms his intention to step down, and compares the idea of an eventual interim government to a stagnant thought on the part of some people, as the reporter mentions. The observation given about the president's declaration by Bashir Baba is that the president has been pushed by a group of unpopular politicians to make decisions that would put them into power without going through elections that they cannot win. Alhaji Bello Katuni describes the presidential words as contradictory to his actions and therefore not credible because he failed to prepare the population for a change of power that should happen through ballots, and that is typical of politicians, which Katuni he mentions.</eng-response>

<eng-response>This report gives an account of the difference in opinions from two critics, Bashir Baba and Bello Katuni, on Nigerian President Obasanjo's denial of ambition for a third term. Amidst rumors of his will to extend his tenure for another term, followed by claims for an interim government, Obansajo denies having such intentions, and adds that calling for an interim government is bringing the situation to a standstill, the reporter said. Baba sees the situation as deja vu; some unscrupulous people, unable to ensure ballots for themselves, enticed the president into taking actions that will bring them to power in the long run. Katuni, on the other hand, sees Obasanjo's message as unreliable simply because politicians tend to hide their real intentions. He said that the president's words are not trustworthy since he has not paved the way for people's involvement in politics.</eng-response>
<eng-fdbk>Correct. You have correctly understood the reporter's introduction of the subject, and the support that the different critics give to the main idea in describing the situation.</eng-fdbk>
