- A: Now that the African Union has concluded its summit meeting
- and chosen Muammar Gaddafi of Libya as its new chairman,
- I spoke with Dr. Isaac Laudarji,
- a Nigerian
- living here in the United States
- and an observer of current global affairs.
- I asked Dr. Laudarji
- why it appears that the African Union has done absolutely nothing
- about the numerous problems that are
- afflicting the continent,
- such as war,
- disease,
- hunger,
- a lack of resources,
- poverty,
- and others.
- B: One of the reasons why, um,
- the African Union has done nothing is that
- the leaders themselves
- do not agree on their role,
- and everyone is afraid that if they say something about this today, tomorrow they may find themselves on the receiving end. But, when they know that they are moving forward according to their country’s constitution, without trying to lead everyone astray or acting out of self-interest or selfishness, what will prevent the president of Nigeria or the president of, um, South Africa from saying to the president of Zimbabwe, “Hey! Enough with the harsh treatment that you are imposing on your people; you must give them room to develop. It is not your birthright, and, even if you are a patriot who fought for independence, that doesn't give you the right to occupy the seat of power for the rest of your life”? Well, you see, if they were to start talking to each other like that, knowing that they are standing up for the truth, this would help. But the majority of them don’t stand up for the truth, and they’re afraid that if they speak up, the same thing will be used against them in the future, since they also crave power. And so this doesn't help us.
- A: And there are those who believe that now the organization has no purpose.
- B: Indeed! Well, I wouldn’t say that the organization has no purpose, but its purpose is limited because it isn’t helping to, for example-um-um-there was a proposal to hold a conference in Uganda of traditional leaders from countries-um-different countries in Africa, which Gaddafi would be leading. What does Gaddafi want to do? Gaddafi wants to do something like what the United States has done, with the whole of Africa becoming a single country. He tried to get the leaders of different African countries interested in this idea, but they didn’t really accept it. He wanted to involve lead-um-traditional leaders to see if he could make use of them. I heard that the president of Uganda prevented this conference from taking place because he said that the lead-um-um-traditional leaders shouldn’t be involved in politics of this sort. He said the conference wouldn’t be held in his country. So, this kind of thing, it’s not an attempt to find a way to build-um-a whole country or a whole African state; everyone is just looking to do something that will serve their own selfishness, their own satisfaction. This is why they can’t cooperate and do what everyone wants to hear, something that everyone can see and hear, because of a fear that they might fail the next time around. They want to hold their own, so when it comes time to divide everything up, there will be something in it for them. So, if that’s the road ahead, I don't see the African Union being very effective going forward, and it will just be about them continuing to meet and focus on devising things out of self-interest. But as for anything that might bring about the creation of a country or-um-a unified Africa, I don’t see how this will happen.
