Northern Nigeria

In predominately-Muslim northern Nigeria, a growing number of people in rural areas are using modern methods and remedies for family planning. Women in the village of Zakire in Kano State have embraced family planning, and have all come to the Zakire clinic to take advantage of the program because it can benefit family health, especially for women and children.

One 32-year-old woman named Rabi’atu Musa told our correspondent that she has seven children. She mentioned [that], as a result of the Community Coalition’s assistance in persuading heads of household to participate in family planning, her husband, who is a farmer, agreed to let her come to the hospital to take advantage of the family planning program so that she might get some relief.

Hauwa Umar, a health worker in the family planning department, explained that at first they were treating ten women a week, but that now they work from Monday through Friday and often have about twenty women come in for family planning services. She said that healthcare workers have an important role to play in establishing a new mindset among district residents.

The Community Participation for Action in the Social Sector (COMPASS) organization, which receives support from the United States Agency for International Development, and began its work in 2004, has taken steps to improve women’s health and education in two northern and two southern Nigerian states.

Mohammed Gama, a community advocate at COMPASS, also noted that they give everyone the opportunity to contribute in their own way toward persuading people from the Zakire area—even uneducated residents—to embrace the family planning program. The insight they use reflects the obvious success COMPASS has had in educating a conservative community to help people understand the best way to look after their families’ health.

Notes

1. Northern Nigeria Cultural Differences

Northern Nigeria is predominately Muslim, though indigenous religions are still common in the area. Some northern states of Nigeria have recently integrated Islamic law into their formerly secular legal system, which has caused controversy among non-Muslim inhabitants of the area. Islamic law has led to the disappearance of many services that are deemed inappropriate by Islamic law, such as family planning centers.

2. COMPASS

The Community Participation for Action in the Social Sector (COMPASS) is a project spearheaded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The goal of the project is to reach out to Nigerian communities and make improvements in the social sector of the country, including in areas such as medicine and family planning.
