Grapefruit Improves Health

“Lemun taba”, which in English is called a grapefruit, is said by experts to have spread to the rest of the world from Jamaica. It grows on a tree hung with round fruit similar to lemons.

Here in Nigeria, this fruit ripens on the tree to a yellow or green color. Inside its peel it is usually pure white or light yellow. Other types that are found in the world have reddish or yellowish fruit. Its taste is a mix of sweet and sour, because of the acid in it, though it produces a substance that mellows the acidity.

Like some other fruit, grapefruit contains Beta-carotene, which can become Vitamin A in a person’s liver. There are strong substances in grapefruit that remove impurities from the intestines and the rest of the body. It also contains Vitamin C, calcium and potassium, among others. These substances in grapefruit are extremely important for protecting the human body from contracting infections and heart ailments.

Those who drink fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice regularly acquire protection against malarial fevers, because in it there is a substance called quinine, which is used in making anti-malaria medicine.

In traditional medicine, grapefruit is used in many ways:

It is taken as a tonic for increasing strength and energizing the body. It also helps with the digestion of food, so that a person’s body feels good while processing food. It also has a lot of ingredients that hasten urination.

The important effects that grapefruit has on the human body include:

  • Giving the body protection from infection.
  • The white skin under the grapefruit peel has lots of Vitamin C and similar ingredients. Therefore, it eliminates toxins and provides protection against colds.
  • It prevents cirrhosis of the liver. The effects that grapefruit has on the human body occur as long as a person uses fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice to receive protection against illnesses that are harmful to the body.
  • There are also other ingredients, called bioflavonoids, whose effect is to prevent the human body from producing substances that might give rise to tumors in the body.
  • Grapefruit helps those who want to lose weight.

Substances that give grapefruit its flavor contain very little sugar.

  • It is as good as a lemon in terms of its effects on the body.
  • It helps prevent a person from overeating by providing a lot of calories, which reduces elevated blood pressure.

Those who want to lose weight should take a grapefruit and about six kola nuts, grind the nuts up and mix them with about 500 milliliters (a big cup) of grapefruit juice. One should drink this mixture three times a day.

Other benefits of grapefruits include:

Drinking one cup of grapefruit juice each day is medicine for spinal meningitis. Its potency for digestion is a reason why people like to drink some before eating food. Those who want to see grapefruit’s positive effects shouldn’t mix it with starchy or sugary food.

And drinking grapefruit juice before going to bed will promote sound sleep, especially for those people who suffer from elevated blood pressure.

Drinking grapefruit juice regularly prevents body aches and sore joints, especially for those who suffer from rheumatism.

As mentioned above, it provides protection against sudden attacks of malarial fever. It prevents the formation of small kidney stones. And it helps protect against dry and swollen skin and pimples, which is called eczema in English.
