What is the position of malaria fever? A: And so, the Kano State government has taken concrete steps to halt the spread of malaria within the community. As a result, it held a ceremony in the Wudil local government area to distribute about 30,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets that are good for five years and were donated by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Before we go on, let’s first have an introduction from the director of public health, Dr. Muhammadu Dayyabu. B: Without a doubt, malaria is a disease that affects everyone, but it is especially dangerous for pregnant women and children under the age of five; they are most susceptible to and disabled by it. And as you have said, when pregnant women contract malaria, some of them even suffer miscarriages and die in the process, and it can have various other kinds of harmful effects. And if a woman survives a miscarriage, there may be other issues, like the child may be born with birth defects. Well, this government is making a tremendous effort to offer a specific strategy to curb the spread of malaria. For example, I’m sure you know that the state government has established a special ministry for the environment, which is tasked with disposing of refuse and sewage, and ensuring that the environment does not encourage the breeding of mosquitoes. So this is helping to control malaria in Kano State a great deal. The second thing is, there is a new plan in which pregnant women are given prophylaxis against malaria twice during their pregnancies. And this prevents them from contracting the disease. And I’m sure you’ve heard that any woman who contracts the disease during pregnancy or childbirth gets free medicine at government hospitals in Kano State. There is another plan that Kano State has introduced, with the help of the federal government and the World Bank, to raise awareness about medicine that protects against malaria. Well, this is happening now, and will be launched any day now, God willing. And I’m sure you know that several months ago, children who were given polio vaccines or other immunizations received free insecticide-treated mosquito nets, which, God willing, protect against mosquito bites, or if they do happen to bite you, there will be no adverse effects. A: But you were distributing them at no cost? B: People who showed up to be vaccinated received them for free, and more than two hundred thousand have been distributed here in Kano State. And there are others that will continue to be distributed, God willing, so that every local government area will have them. A: Meanwhile, the Kano State commissioner of health, representing the honorable governor at this ceremony, implored women to make good use of this opportunity, and also warned shopkeepers, in case they are tempted to take advantage of the situation. C: And I am calling on women, for God’s sake, please, if you get one of these mosquito nets, don’t sell it. If you get one, use it, because it has been provided for your use, not for you to sell. And I am warning shopkeepers, if we see you selling these mosquito nets in your shop, we will not look the other way; someone will come and arrest you. Anyone who is caught selling them, if we see somebody selling them, we’re not going to ignore it. |

Notes
Combating Malaria in Kano State
1. Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted either from one person to another through infected Anopheles mosquitoes, from a mother to an unborn baby, or by blood transfusions. It is carried by mosquitoes in temperate climates while the parasite disappears during winter.
2. As one of the most common, treatable, and preventable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is said to affect many women and very young children living in the tropical, impoverished areas whose conditions hasten the spread of the disease.
3. Malaria is estimated to kill about 1 million of the 300-500 million people who contract it annually. Most people neglect it and depend on the government to prevent and eradicate the disease. Since the disease requires individual efforts in the prevention process, malaria continues to be a deadly disease but NGOs and governments are making efforts to eradicate and prevent it.

<category>Background Information</category>
<note>1. Due to the poverty level in Africa, some people use the material aid they receive to feed their families by selling it. Some, for instance, will trade their mosquito nets to get money for food, while others are ignorant of the importance of using the net.
There have been efforts made in many parts of Africa to prevent malaria. In Kano State there have been meetings and workshops held to educate the rural (and sometimes uneducated) citizens about the disease and different ways to prevent it.
Women are identified as an important group with an important role to play, "especially on the environmental sanitation and destruction of in-house mosquito breeding/hiding sites. The women are also responsible for taking a sick child to treatment centers; as such they hold too, the potentials in reversing the alarming trend of malaria morbidity especially in rural areas."
