President Bush arrived at Saudi Arabia
President Bush has arrived in Saudi Arabia, where he is set to seek support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and to continue efforts to exert pressure on Iran. Mr. Bush is using his tour of the Middle East to ask U.S.-allied Arab countries to support Palestinian leaders with funding and diplomacy in their negotiations with Israel. In his speech on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, the President requested that Persian Gulf countries join hands with Washington to confront what he called "the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism". The countries and their Sunni populations in the coastal region of the Persian Gulf continue to have relations with Iran, despite their concern about growing Iranian power in the region. Mr. Bush is also scheduled to meet Saudi leaders on issues that will include the sale of arms. Before he left for Saudi Arabia, President Bush made a short visit to Dubai. He told a group of young Arab leaders that America respected their religion and that it wanted to work with them in peace. In order to honor President Bush's brief visit, the Dubai government declared a holiday and shut down the main roads and bridges for security reasons. Mr. Bush began touring the city, by paying a visit to the home of the former ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, where he viewed some historic materials including photographs and traditional artifacts. Later, Mr. Bush had lunch with students of Dubai School of Government. Dubai was the second city where Mr. Bush made a stopover. He had earlier visited an alternative energy exhibition at the Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi. |

Notes
President Bush's Visit to Saudi Arabia
1. Traditionally, Israel and Saudi Arabia are allies of the United States in the Middle East. The United States has been involved in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process for some time, but recently, at the end of 2007, the Bush administration convened an international conference in Annapolis, Maryland to officially revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. During the Shah’s regime, Iran was also a U.S ally and friend. However, in 1979 the Shah’s regime was overthrown by supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini and he fled abroad. Widely criticized for harsh policies, the Shah was unable to successfully relocate to a permanent location. While attempting to receive medical treatment in the United States, Iranian militants overran the U.S. Embassy in Teheran, capturing 54 of the embassy's staff members. The Shah was immediately removed from the United States. However, the military demanded that the he be turned over to them, that all of his assets be returned to Iran and that the Unites States apologize for supporting crimes against the Iranian people. Soon afterwards, in 1980, the Shah died while in Egypt.

<note>1. Saudi Arabia is not only the homeland of the Arab peoples—it is thought that the first Arabs originated on the Arabian Peninsula—but also the homeland of Islam, the world's second-largest religion. Muhammad founded Islam there, and it is the location of the two holy pilgrimage cities of Mecca and Medina. The Islamic calendar begins in 622, the year of the hegira, or Muhammad's flight from Mecca.
2. There was a war between Israel and the Arabs; Israel defeated the Arabs in seven days of war. As a result of their victory, Israel took over Palestinian land and conflict between the two has continued to this day. Many resolutions were adopted through the United Nations condemning Israel’s heavy-handed approach to the Palestinians. Other measures have been taken by the United State to bring the two parties together and on several occasions settlements were reached (e.g. the Oslo Accords, the Madrid Peace Conference and the Camp David Accords).
3. Shiekh Saeed Al Maktoum was born in 1912. A deeply religious man, Shiekh Saeed ruled Dubai for forty- six years until his death in 1958. He based his decisions on the teachings of Islam and had a reputation for “practicing what he preached.” Today, his house is a major landmark in Dubai.
4. The Dubai school of government is a research and teaching institution focusing on public policy in the Arab world. The school was established in 2005 under the patronage of HH Shiekh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, in cooperation with the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University
