Teachers' strike in Nigeria A: Well then, the Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives are trying to bring an end to the teachers’ strike in that country. Madina Dauda brings us the complete story. B: The Senate Committee on Education, under the leadership of Mrs. Joy Emordi, summoned Minister of Education Igwe Aja-Nwachuku regarding the strike on the part of school teachers in Nigeria, which has now entered its fourth week. Before extending this invitation to the minister, the House of Representatives Committee on Education met with the leaders of the teachers’ union, at which time the committee said it would lead the organization to the State House of Assembly, where they would meet with President Umar Musa Yar'Adua on the issue of special salaries for teachers. Faruk Lawan is committee chairman. C: Well, the dispute continues unabated, and as everyone knows, this situation affects the lives of our children, their parents and even the country’s economy. . So this is why we believed it was necessary to issue another appeal, to sit down again with members of the teachers’ union in order to hear, first of all, if there was anything that had transpired between our previous meeting with them and now, between them and the executive arm of the government. Secondly, we again renewed our appeal for them to give us the opportunity to continue with the role that we believe has become incumbent upon us, to get the government to begin paying the country's teachers based on this salary scale, which as I have said before, we in the legislature have allocated in the 2008 budget. B: Meanwhile, Nuhu Dogo Makama of the Kaduna State House of Assembly says teachers must be treated fairly right from this world. D: Well, this is no small issue. Teachers must be trained and their shelter, welfare and other issues must be provided for. Therefore, we must be patient and attend to such matters very, very carefully, and also pursue the government very patiently-- B: For now, students are on a mandatory break until the teachers' strike is finally resolved. |

Notes
Teachers Continue to Strike in Nigeria
1. The education system in Nigeria has been formed by a number of influences from colonial to post independence and democracy eras. In 1990, there were three fundamental educational systems: the indigenous system, religious Quranic schools, and the western-style education institutions introduced by Christian missionaries.
Education became the responsibility of the State and the majority of Nigerians have their children in public school. However, the sector is affected by multiple problems ranging from poor infrastructure to insufficient working materials, which affects teachers most. They are among the lowest paid professionals in Nigeria.
