Yesterday Friday was celebrated to honor refugees... A: Friday marked World Refugee Day, designated by the United Nations in order to draw attention to and demonstrate sympathy toward refugees. On Thursday, an American refugee agency released a report stating that there are more than fourteen million refugees in various parts of the world, the majority of which face daily challenges in life, particularly on the African continent. And they continue to face death threats in countries like Burma and elsewhere in Southern Asia. The American refugee agency report showed that about two million refugees have escaped from Iraq since the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and that the majority of them have fled to Syria and Jordan, settling together and seeking employment in order to survive. |

Notes
Considering Refugees Worldwide
1. The United Nations estimated the number of refugees to ten million worldwide. This number increases as a result of political instability (among other issues), and countries like the United States continue to receive a high number of refugees from countries including Iraq, Sudan, and Somalia.
2. Thirty-seven million people are estimated to be in need of international protection and assistance, including twelve million refugees and twenty-five million who are forced to leave their homes by violence (Sudan) or disaster (in Asia). Some have crossed their countries while others have not, but both are faced with hardships and little or no protection following the international law. There are different types of organizations helping displaced people, including the American Refugee Committee (ARC). The ARC, for example, serves refugees in Thailand, Pakistan, Darfur (Sudan), Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other countries.

<note>1. Refugees from Iraq have increased in number since the US-led invasion into Iraq in March 2003. An estimated 1.6-2.0 million people have fled the country. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimated in a report released in November 2006 that more than 1.6 million Iraqis had left Iraq since March 2003, nearly 7 percent of the total population. The BBC on 22 January 2007 placed the refugee figure at 2 million. By 16 February 2007, António Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said that the external refugee number reached 2 million and that within Iraq there are an estimated 1.7 million internally displaced people. The refugee traffic out of the country has increased since the intensification of civil war.
As of June 21, 2007, the UNHCR estimated that over 4.2 million Iraqis have been displaced, with 2 million within Iraq and 2.2 million in neighboring countries.
Most ventured to Jordan and Syria, creating demographic shifts that have worried both governments. A fear persisted in both countries, and others hosting sizable Iraqi refugee populations, that sectarian tensions would spill over amongst the exiles. These refugees were estimated to have been leaving Iraq at a rate of 3000-per-day by December 2006.
Roughly 40% of Iraq's middle class is believed to have fled, the U.N. said. Most are fleeing systematic persecution and have no desire to return. Refugees are mired in poverty as they are generally barred from working in their host countries. In Syria alone an estimated 50,000 Iraqi girls and women, many of them widows, are forced into prostitution just to survive.

2. According to Refugees International, "The United States, which took as many as 200,000 refugees in the early 80s, now accepts about 50,000 refugees for resettlement each year, up from 28,000 in the two years immediately after September 11, but still less than the Bush Administration’s avowed goal of 70,000 annual admissions. The new UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, has recently announced that UNHCR plans to devote greater resources to facilitating resettlement of refugees."
