Water and sanitation issues receive priority attention at 11th AU [African Union] summit

On June 30, the 11th summit of the African Union (AU) opened in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where presidents and heads of government or representatives from the 53 AU member states discussed development policies.

The six-year-old regional organization opened the 11th summit on June 30. The main theme of the summit is “Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation.” Reports indicate that at the close of the summit, participants will draft a statement on how the millennium development goals on water and sanitation would be met.

At the opening ceremony of the summit, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak delivered a speech in which he said the meeting was taking place at a crucial time when the world was facing many problems. He said, “The world currently faces problems involving food, rising fuel costs, generating fuel from natural resources, and the harmful effects of climate change. This is why the global community must face their responsibility to have an honest dialogue on these issues and take steps together to address the crises that the world is facing.”

This leader added that Africa’s stand on addressing these crises was one of the most important issues to be discussed at the summit.

In the past and at the present time, droughts and the issue of shortages of clean water have been a concern for African countries in the area of development. Even though Africa achieved some progress in providing clean water and improving sanitation over the past year, there is still much work to be done in order to meet the millennium development goals. Honest discussions will be held at the summit on different developmental goals and the ways to achieve those goals.

Notes

The Eleventh African Union Summit 1. The African Union (AU), the equivalent of the European Union or the Organization of American States, succeeded the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 2002. It is a pan-African organization conceived by the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, made up of both political and administrative bodies. It aims to boost development , promote unity and peace, eradicate poverty among its 53 member nations, and bring the continent into the global economy.

The African Union's main decision-making body is the Assembly, which is made up by the heads of state or government of it's member countries. Other institutions of the AU include: the Executive Council, which comprises the foreign ministers of member countries, the Permanent Representative Committee made up of ambassadors, the Commission which represents the administrative branch, the Pan-African Parliament, its highest legislative body, the Economic Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), and other official bodies.

The African Union oversees the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), which works with other international organizations and institutions like the UN to establish conditions for sustainable development of the continent.
