  1. BREAST CANCER
  2. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in
  3. women both in the developed and less developed
  4. world. It accounted for 24.45% of all the cancer
  5. types. Although breast cancer is thought to be a
  6. disease of the developed world, almost 50% of
  7. breast cancer cases and 58% of deaths occur in
  8. less developed countries (GLOBOCAN 2008).
  9. Incidence rates vary greatly worldwide from 19.3
  10. per 100,000 women in Eastern Africa to 89.7 per
  11. 100,000 women in Western Europe. In most of the
  12. developing regions the incidence rates are below 40
  13. per 100,000 (GLOBOCAN 2008). The lowest
  14. incidence rates are found in most African countries
  15. but here breast cancer incidence rates are also
  16. increasing. Recent observations also showed that
  17. the frequency of breast cancer had risen over that of
  18. cervical cancer in Nigeria.
  19. RISK FACTORS TO BREAST CANCER
  20. 1. A familial history of breast cancer increases the
  21. risk by a factor of two or three
  22. li. Reproductive factors associated with prolonged
  23. exposure to endogenous estrogens, such as early
  24. menarche, late menopause, late age at first
  25. childbirth are among the most important risk factors.
  26. iii. Exogenous hormones also exert a higher risk for
  27. breast cancer. Oral contraceptive and hormone
  28. replacement therapy users, for at higher risk than
  29. non-users.
  30. Iv. 21% of all breast cancer deaths worldwide are
  31. attributable to alcohol use, overweight and obesity,
  32. and physical inactivity.
