Hausa at Boston University
BU has over 20 years of experience teaching Hausa and is one of the few places that offer instruction in both Hausa’s writing systems—boko and ajami. Many of the students who have taken Hausa at BU go on to participate in the BU Study Abroad Program in Niger. Others have used the language in their research. All have found it to be a window on another culture and way of life.

The summer Hausa language program at Boston University is taught in an intensive 10-hour-per-week format for students with no prior experience in the language. The courses cover the full first-year Hausa curriculum and lead toward proficiency in oral expression, listening comprehension, reading, writing, and cultural understanding. Hausa instruction employs a communicative approach with various electronic and digital materials as aids in pronunciation, visualization, and contextualization. Students also learn important features of regional dialects of the language, particularly differences between the Hausa of Niger and Nigeria respectively, to be able to communicate effectively throughout the region and in both urban and rural environments.
