za. I. [za/]. {A particle of futurity. It precedes and requires the following verb in the subjunctive. In 1st pers. sg. za/ n (in) is contracted to za+n, zan gan shi = (alt. S.) za ni gan shi, I shall see him. In 3rd sing. masc. the usual form at Kano is za+i contracted from za/ ya", but elsewhere the formza/ shi" uncontracted is very common}. [go"be+ za/+ mu" ga+ma"], we shall finish to-morrow. gobe zai (za shi) gama, he will finish to-morrow. II. [za/+] {v. invariable}. Has future sense shall go to, or will go to. {It is followed, not preceded, by its subject pronoun. The form of pronoun used is that used with other verbs as objective pronoun}. e.g. za/ shi gida, he is about to go home. za mu gida, we are going home. gobe za ni kasuwa, to-morrow I am going (shall go) to market. Seeking; looking for a person or thing. e.g. guga tsai, zabari tsai (lit. not the bucket only but the hook also has fallen into the well), failure to return of two messengers, one of whom has been sent to lookfor the other.

After the floor of the house of a young man's first bride has been beaten, the workers, dressed in their best, sit in the compound and the bridegroom's friends collect on the roof of a house (they may not enter the compound by the usual way) and dispense gifts lavishly, throwing them down to the women below.

zogi [zo/"gi/+] {n.m.}. The throbbing of a painful spot, esp. where there is pus. (= 'doki; zunga; cf. jitsa.)

zoje. I. [zo/je] {v.tr.2d}. 1. Damage a fence (cattle, goats, rubbing against it). 2. Skirt the edge of. e.g. yak'i ya/ z. gari kaza/, the war came quite close to such-and-such a town. (Cf. bulbula; 'dura; tsiyaya.) {zu+bo/+ (2e. iv, v) ; zu"bu+ (3a. ii)}. 2. yara (mutane, dawaki, &c.) sun z. tsere, the boys (men, horses, &c.) have had a race. {zu+bo/+ (2e. iii)}. 3. Do a lot of. e.g. (a) yina z. masu k'arya, he is telling them lies. (b) an z. aiki yau, a lot of work has been done to-day. (c) sun z. tafiya, they have travelled a long way. (d) ya/ z. masa nauyi, he put him to a lot of trouble. 4. yina z. mulki, he is showing himself as possessing authority, power. 5. State one's case before judge, chief, &c. e.g. mun z., we have stated our case. (Cf. zubi I). 6. zuba ido, (a) muna z. idanmu ga zuwansa, we are (eagerly) awaiting his arrival. (= zira.) (b) na/ z. masa ido, (i) I stared at him; (ii) I stared at him powerless to do anything. (= zira.) (c) When used of a superior to an inferior two meanings are possible, (i) Audu, Kande ya/ z. wa ido, Audu centres all his affections - or reliance - on Kande; (ii) Kande Audu za/ z. mata ido, Audu neglects Kande, lets her do as she pleases and says nothing. (d) When used of inferior to superior then both types of expression have the same meaning, e.g. Audu mai-gida ya/ z. wa ido = mai-gida Audu ya/ z. masa ido, Audu looks to the head of his compound for everything. 7. ya/ z. sau a rijiya. (= zira I. 6 q.v.) 8. an z. hari a gari kaza/, a raid was carried out on such-and-such a town. 9. hatsi ya/ z. ido, grains of corn have begun to form in the heads. 10. ta/ z. adashi, she has paid her contribution into the co-operative system. (Vide adashi.) 11. (a) ka/za ta/ z. k'wai, the hen has laid a lot of eggs. (Cf. saka.)
