Questions <> Tambayoyi

  1. What event is taking place? Suggested Answer: The Miss World pageant is set to be held in Abuja, Nigeria. This is discussed in the first sentence of the report: Nijeriya tana ɗaukar bakuncin gasar zaɓen Sarauniyar Kyau ta Duniya ta bana wadda za a yi cikin watan Disamba a Abuja. (Nigeria is hosting this year’s Miss World pageant, which will be held in December in Abuja.) The term ɗaukar bakunci means to host. Also, one can say karɓar bakunci. The word gasa is a generic word meaning competition. The term gasar zaɓen sarauniyar kyau means pageant.
  2. What has been the response? Suggested Answer: An Islamic group in Nigeria has called upon the President to stop the pageant from being held in Nigeria. This is explained in the second sentence of the report: Wata ƙungiyar Musulumi mai suna Ƙungiyar Ulama ta roƙi shugaba Olusegun Obasanjo da ya hana gudanar da wannan gasa. (A Muslim organization named The Ulama Organization has called on President Olesegun Obasanjo to prevent the pageant from being held in this country.) The verb roƙa means to ask or beg for something. The compound verb yi tambaya also means to ask, but not to ask for something. In other words, roƙa is generally used to mean ask in the sense of requesting that something be done, whereas yi tambaya is usually refers to requesting an answer to a question. gudanar da -- to conduct, to hold (an event) This is a grade 5 verb formed from the same root as gudana (to flow, to happen). The auxiliary verb hana means to prevent and follows the verb from happening. At the time of this article, Olusegun Obasanjo was the president of Nigeria.

in English

Authorities have established a curfew requiring people to be off the streets at night in the city of Kaduna in northern Nigeria after an increase in fighting related to the issue of the Miss World pageant that will be held in the country.

This fighting broke out yesterday (Wednesday) when a group of Muslims who were angered by the affair burned down the office of the newspaper This Day in the Malalin neighborhood of Kaduna. The Muslims were angered by a blasphemous article that the newspaper published about the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in regards to the subject of the Miss World pageant. The newspaper "This Day" has already released an apology for these words.

Question: Check all that applies✅

  1. A curfew has been established in Kaduna.
This statement applies. The following segment from the article contains this information: Hukumomi sun kafa dokar hana yawon dare a garin Kaduna da ke arewacin Nijeriya ... (Authorities have established a curfew requiring people to be off the streets at night in the city of Kaduna, in Northern Nigeria ...) kafa -- to establish This is not pronounced with the glottalized ƙ as in ƙafa (foot). The term dokar hana yawon dare means a night curfew.
  2. Fighting related to the Miss World pageant broke out in Kaduna.
This statement applies. The following segment from the article contains this information:... a bayan da faɗa ya ƙara rincaɓewa mai nasaba da batun gasar Sarauniyar Kyau ta Duniya da za a yi a ƙasar. (... after an increase in fighting related to the issue of the Miss World pageant, which will be held in the country.) The infinitive verb rincaɓewa means to increase to an unacceptable point or to become too much. It is used in the infinitive because it is described by ƙara. Look at the example below to see how an auxiliary verb has this effect in English. The use of the auxiliary verb to continue requires the verb to be used in the infinitive. He went to work. He continued to go to work. The term mai nasaba is a way of saying in relation to.
  3. A Muslim group has threatened to set fire to various buildings.
  4. The fighting is related to the publishing of a controversial article.
This statement applies. The information is seen in the following segment from the article: Musulumin sun fusata ne da wani kalamin ɓatancin da jaridar ta buga kan Annabi Muhammad (S.A.W.) dangane da batun zaɓen Sarauniyar Kyau ta Duniya. (The Muslims were angered by a blasphemous article that the newspaper published about the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in regards to the subject of the Miss World pageant.) The use of the stabilizer ne acts like a previous reference marker. It was already mentioned that the Muslims were angry. This sentence is attempting to provide the reason for that anger. Thus, if ne were not included, the beginning of this sentence would sound like a repetition of what was already said. The word kalami is based on the same Arabic root as kalma (word, phrase) and means talk, orspeech. It is synonymous with magana, although it tends to come across as more cultured. The initials S.A.W. stand for the Arabic "sallallahou alayhi wasallam," which means "may God bless him and grant him peace." This particular salutation is reserved for the prophet Muhammad. While, it is not always used in Hausa, it is considered an important piece of propriety, especially in written Hausa.
  5. The publishers of This Day say that they did nothing wrong.

  16. Nigeria received the opportunity to host the Miss World contest because a Nigerian named Agbani Darego won the title of Miss World last year.
Nijeriya ta samu damar karɓar bakuncin zaben Sarauniyar Kyau ta Duniyar ce a bayan da 'yar Nijeriya mai suna Agbani Darego ta zamo Sarauniyar Kyau ta Duniya a shekarar da ta shige.

Q6: Why was the competition set to be held in Nigeria?

  1. Because of Nigeria's position as West Africa's tourism capital.
  2. Because Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa.
  3. Because a Nigerian won the previous year's competition.

Hint: Look at the final paragraph of the article for the answer.

Correct. Because a Nigerian won the previous year's competition.

This information is found in the following segment from the article:

Nijeriya ta samu damar karɓar bakuncin zaɓen Sarauniyar Kyau ta Duniyar ce a bayan da 'yar Nijeriya mai suna Agbani Darego ta zamo sarauniyar kyau ta duniya a shekarar da ta shige. (Nigeria received the opportunity to host the Miss World contest because a Nigerian named Agbani Darego won the Miss World title last year.)

  • karɓar bakunci = ɗaukar bakunci

The verb shige is the grade 4 verb derived from the same root word as shiga. This form of the verb (generally ending in a low-tone -e) usually denotes an action that is completed or done completely. Thus, while shiga means to enter, shige means to have already come and passed. This is why it is used in the set phrase shekarar da ta shige (last year).

Q5: What has become of the contestants?

  1. A plane is on its way from London to take them away.
  2. They have hired a plane that is waiting to take them to London.
  3. They have already arrived in London.

Hint: Look for the paragraph that refers to the 80 contestants/candidates (masu takara).

Correct. They have already arrived in London.

This information is found in the following segment from the article:

A yau lahadi da safe wani jirgin saman da aka yi haya ɗauke da 'yan mata fiye da 80 masu yin takara a gasar ya sauka a filin jirgin saman Gatwick na London, a bayan da ya taso cikin dare daga Abuja, babban birnin Nijeriya. (This morning (Sunday) a hired airplane carrying more than 80 contestants of the pageant landed at Gatwick Airport in London after leaving in the night from Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. )

The noun haya is a loanword adapted from the English word hire.

The word ɗauke in this sentence is a stative adverb formed from the verb ɗauka.

  • Ya zo da kayanmu. (He came with our things.)
  • Ya zo dauke da kayanmu. (He came carrying our things.)

In the second sentence the adverb ɗauke (carrying) describes the state in which he came. In English this idea would usually by expressed with a past of present participle, but in Hausa they are adverbs of state. The formation of these adverbs is perfectly uniform: a verb (or sometimes a noun) is changed to take an -e (high-tone) ending. The verb ɗauka means to lift. The adverb ɗauke (da) means in the state of having lifted, in other words carrying.

The preposition fiye da (more than) is also constructed by means of this same form. Thus, the verb fi (to exceed) is transformed to fiye (in the state of being in excess of).

Q4: What has been decided in regards to the Miss World contest?

  1. It has been suspended temporarily, and the contestants have returned to London.
  2. It will be held in London, instead of Abuja.
  3. It has been canceled until nex year, when it will be held in London.

Hint: Look for the paragraph that talks about the organizers of the event (masu shiryan gasar). Note that the verb ɗage (with an implosive ɗ) means to lift, to suspend, or to cancel, depending upon the context.

Correct. It will be held in London, instead of Abuja.

This information is found in the following segment from the article:

Masu shirya zaɓen Sarauniyar Kyaun sun ɗage wannan gasa suka mayar da ita zuwa London a ƙasar Ingila. (The organizers of the Miss World pageant have cancelled the pageant and moved it to London, England.)

  • ɗage -- to lift, to suspend

While the verb ɗage is sometimes translated as to suspend, in this case cancel is a better definition. It is only through context that this is clear. If the sentence were to end with sun ɗage wannan gasar the meaning would be suspended becuase they lifted it and that is all. In this case however it is explained that the moved it (mayar da ita) to London.

This is a good example of how Hausa verbs tend to create a visual image of what they refer to. Knowing the most common definitions will often fail you, unless you also know the base meaning of the verb. When you are confused about the meaning of a verb, it is often helpful to think of the literal image being created by the verb phrase and then figure out what that would mean within the context.

Q3: What has become of the journalist who wrote the controversial article?

  1. ✅She has been fired.
  2. She has gone into hiding.
  3. She has fled the country.

Hint: Look at the paragraph in the middle of the article that starts with Jaridar "This Day" ...

The verb kora means to chase, but can also mean to follow, to send away, or to fire.

Correct. She has been fired.

This information is found in the following segment from the article:

Jaridar ta “This Day” ta faɗa a yau lahadi cewar ta kori yar jaridar da ta rubuta wannan sharhi (Isioma Daniel); sharhin da akasarin Musulumai suka ɗauka a zaman na ɓatanci. (The newspaper This Day announced today (Sunday) that it had fired the journalist who had written the piece (Isioma Daniel), a piece that the majority of Muslims see as blasphemous. )

  • faɗa -- to say
    • This verb is often replaced by its verbal noun faɗi even in cases where normally a veral noun would not replace the verb.
  • kora -- to chase
    • As a grade 2 verb, the ending changes to -i (kori) when it takes a noun direct object. This verb has a number of meanings depending on the context. In this case, it means to fire.

The verb ɗauka (to pick up, to take) can be used in an abstract sense similar to how we use take, as in the phrase "Don't take it personally." This is done through use of the verb phrase ɗauka a zaman ... (to take ... as being ...).

  • Abdu ya ɗauki wannan magana a zaman zagi. (Abdou took this talk as an insult.)

Q2: What has the government done in response to the crisis in Kaduna?

  1. They have called in soldiers to aid the riot police after Saturday night's violence.
  2. On Saturday, they established a militarized zone in Kaduna.
  3. A large number of riot police and soldiers were sent to Kaduna.

Hint: This is explained in reference to what happened on Saturday (asabar) night.

girka -- to install, to station

Correct.

This information is found in the following segment from the article:

An ci gaba da tashin hankali cinkin daren jiya asabar, duk da cewa an girka sojoji da yan sandan kwantar da tarzoma masu yawa cikin garin na Kaduna. (The fighting continued last (Saturday) night, in spite of the fact that large numbers of soldiers and riot police have been sent into the city of Kaduna. )

Note that while the verb girka is often use to mean to cook, its base meaning is to set something on something, as in the act of positioning a large cauldron on the rocks surrounding a fire, so that it can cook. Here, it is used to mean install, as in installing troops or a police presence in an area.

Q1: What has been the result of the violence since the burning of the offices of This Day?

  1. Over 200 dead, over a thousand injured, thousands left homeless, and mosques and churches destroyed.
  2. Over 200 dead, nearly 10,000 injured, over 1,000 homes destroyed, and mosques and churches destroyed.
  3. Over 200 dead, another 1,000 missing, and mosques and churches destroyed.

Hint: Note that there are two different paragraphs in which Emmanuel Ijewere is mentioned. In the first paragraph, he only mentions the death count. In the third paragraph, he provides additional details.

Correct.

This information is found in the following segments from the article. In the first paragraph, the Red Cross representative provides a death toll:

Emmanuel Ijewere, ya ce mutane fiye da 200 aka kasha a kwanaki huɗun da aka shafe ana taɓka rikicin addini a garin Kaduna da ke arewacin ƙasar. (Immanuel Ijewere said that more than 200 people have been killed in the four days of inter-religious fighting that has happened in Kaduna, in northern Nigeria.)

The verb shafe (to wipe) can be used to mean to spend time. Note that this type of auxiliary differs from its English counterpart:

Mun shafe kwana huɗu muna tafiya. (We spent four days traveling.) Whereas, the English uses the verbal noun (traveling), Hausa uses the continuous verb (muna tafiya).

In the third paragraph, we find out what additional details were provided by Ijewere:

... ya yi ƙiyasin cewa wasu mutanen su fiye da dubu 10 sun rasa gidajensu, yayin da mutane dubu ɗaya suka ji rauni a faɗan da aka yi ta gwabzawa a tsakanin Musulumi da Kirista. Har ila yau an lalata masallatai da majamiu. (... estimated that more that 10,000 people have lost their homes, while 1,000 have been injured in the fighting that has raged between Muslims and Christians. Furthermore, Mosques and churches have been destroyed. )

  1. yi ƙiyasi -- to estimate
  2. ji rauni -- to get an injury

The use of ji is somewhat deceptive here. This verb does not describe the sensation of feeling and injury. It simply means to get injured.

In the verb phrase aka yi ta gwabzawa, the particle ta plays a special role. Rather, than the pronoun ta or the particle ta meaning via, it is a particle that adds a sense of continuousness to the verb yi. In other words, whereas yi means to do, the combination yi ta means to keep on doing.

What had the event organizers hoped that this event would do?

Hint: Look at the paragraph that begins with Har ila yau ...

What distinction does the Miss World television broadcast hold?

Hint: This is explained in an embedded clause within the sentence that describes the event organizers hopes:.

  • kamo ƙafar -- to catch the foot of
    • This means to catch up to, or to match, someone or something.

According to the article, what did many Nigerians fear that the competition would do?

Hint: This is explained in the same paragraph where the event organizers hopes are discussed.

  • fasiki -- an immoral person

(On Tuesday, the deputy governor of Zamfara State declared the death sentence on Isioma Daniel, calling upon all Muslims to kill her.)
    • mataimakin gwamna -- deputy governor
      • Noter that mataimakin is used to mean assistant, vice, deputy, and any other such role.
    • yanke hukunci -- pass a sentence
      • The use of this term means that this is an official pronouncement and not just the opinion of one person. The use of ga with kira (ya yi kira ga ...) expresses to call upon.
  2. Does this article add to your understanding of what was written in the This Day article? Yes/No. There is no new information on the content of the controversial article.
